How many of you are familiar with the signals for locomotive whistles?

I am, and everybody on this list with Class I experience is, and we're not the only ones. The whistle signals given in most rulebooks are a bit different than the example you post here. And there are not only many more hand and lantern signals than shown, but the omission of any kind of back up sign is telling. We also have day signals (come to me/go away from me/stop given by hand) as opposed to night signals (forward/back up/stop given by lantern). Nonetheless, this is an example of how our operating rules have evolved over the years (or maybe... centuries). |

Thanks for the heads up QJ. I'm posting a link to the complete book. I'll bet there are quite a few updates to the codes since this was published. https://archive.org/details/practicalpoints00farn |
