| Post subject: | Identify This CNJ Stone Plaque? | ||
Someone sent me this photo he found of this stone CNJ plaque, and is wondering if it still exists and where it's located (I assume on some former CNJ depot or other structure). Also, he is wondering if the CNJ ever had a locomotive of the type depicted, a very early 4-4-0, but I don't have access to any information about early locomotives of the CNJ or predecessors. Any clues would be appreciated.

That is at the former CNJ station in Newark. Where the train shed was is now the location of the arena where the NJ Devils play. |

I understand that the station façade that was saved is in danger of being demolished for redevelopment of the block. |

The arcade with ramps up to track level is still in place. It can be seen from inside the Prudential Center parking garage. Two preservation notes about that area: 1) In the initial Pru Center plans the CNJ terminal facade and arcade were to be used as an entrance off Broad Street. That was nixed the arena was built without a Broad Street entrance - one of the few mistakes made in what is otherwise a great arena. 2) The Central Graphic Arts building (a warehouse once served by the CNJ) is undergoing a tremendous repurposing as mixed use space that will house the Mars candy HQ. https://jerseydigs.com/inside-ironside-former-newark-warehouse-adaptive-commercial-reuse/ One final note, one of the most unique approaches ever taken in model railroading is focused on the CNJ Newark Branch.
