There's an interesting note on the Ahead of the Torch (AOTT) website today; a private owner has raised steam in his Glover Machine Works 0-6-0T for his privately owned railroad in Junction City, Georgia! Not operational yet, the engine still needs throttle work "and a few other odds and ends". This engine (and a sister Glover) were built for the standard gauge Cherokee Brick & Tile Company as their number 6. The Glover s/n is 13186 and there is some question as to the built date; 1916 or 1919. Of the handful of surviving Glover locomotives, I believe this is the first one that has been steamed in the preservation era. Les |

Thanks! Those little things were squashed down to fit under an overpass at Cherokee. Cherokee was owned by the Dunwoody family, who were related to the Glovers. I have some pictures somewhere....... I think the Ecuadorian Glover was steamed in the preservation era also. The sister is actually an 0-2-0 (or was when I last saw it). 2 wheelsets were removed by Cherokee to replace others on a diesel if the legend is true. |

Didn't realize there was a surviving Glover down in Ecuador! As for this Cherokee Glover, apparently the owner intends to convert it to a tender engine which is his right to do since it's his engine. But I think as an 0-6-0T, it is kind of a one-of-a-kind locomotive; square edged saddle tanks, and a flat roof on the cab due to the clearance issues you mentioned. Well, either way, good to see it being restored to operation. Les |
