Quote: While I 'm sure some of the trips between Baltimore and Washington were fantrips, most of them ran as the scheduled local passenger trains between those two cities, normally operated by RDC's. There was an air-conditioned B&O coach in the middle of the train for the regular passengers, who were expecting a short train of air-conditioned RDC's. The best part was the sound of 2100 pulling out of each intermediate station trying to keep the local's schedule. It failed since it didn't have the acceleration away from intermediate station stops, not to mention they had to wye the entire consist at each end. They did get the train up to the maximum allowed speed of 70 mph between stops. It was a wonderful sight, and sound, to behold. _________________ Peter Schmidt Anyone have photos of these trips and the consists? Wesley |

1) In 25 years of archival work at the Md. Rail Heritage Library, including overseeing a complete listing of all Baltimore area excursions and special trips, I've never heard this detail. Photos of some of the "Iron Hose Days" trips, yes--but not operating as a regular commuter train. 2) Source of this quote? 3) "Pete" Schmidt was a generous donor to the Library in books, photos, and periodicals, according to my records, but I believe he has passed away AND his given name was Henry Schmidt (away from master computer now and can't check). Let's see if we can avoid confusion here. |

I'm working from memory here but B&O's announcement named the scheduled trains the Iron Horse Days consist would represent. A July 1964 Official Guide shows B&O 1-2 (National Ltd) and 5-6 (Capitol Limited) originated/terminated at Baltimore Camden Station. The other trains between Balto and Wash were in the 100-series and connected with through trains West at Wash. They were not specifically shown as "Speedliner" (B&O's term for an RDC) equipment. I had specifically booked B&O 5 from Balto to Wash, expecting to ride the actual Capitol Limited behind a Reading steam engine. Not so. The Chicago train and the steam train ran as separate sections of 5. My consist was mostly RDG coaches, but with some B&O cars including (as I recall) a Budd dome sleeper and an observation car. The Official Guide does not show the B&O was schedulling their third dome sleeper on the Shenandoah every other day, so the car was available. Phil Mulligan |
