Rob I have a few of your cab valve shut off handles from the conversion from coal to oil. Tom Payne left behind some parts of that locomotive at our locomotive rebuild facility in Tacoma. I was fortunate enough to have noticed those parts during a clean up and saved them. Unfortunately Tom paid something like $5,000 for 4 of these special hooks used to lift the locomotive off the ground. I tried to save those but the owner wouldn't allow it. I will be heading up to Ohio this Summer and will drop them off at your shop. |

Tom, That is great news. Thank you for thinking of us and keeping track of those valve handles. Looking forward to connecting with you this summer. I'll send you a PM to coordinate. Rob Gardner ASR President and 2100 Project Manager |

I was interested in the comment about installing the staybolts with fillet welds..... it's been years since I had to deal with stay replacements, but are fillet welded stays now SOP? back then we had to do FP welds.... nice if regulations are following technological improvements from my POV. |

Hi Dave, I wonder if the welder misspoke, being made nervous by the camera. If you look closely at the video portion of cleaning the firebox sheets it looks to me like those holes are countersunk for full-pen. mld |

Old monitor, new information. Still, official clarification would be nice. I recall Linn talking about Strasburg doing tests of fillet welded stays at a TRAIN conference about 25 years ago, very interesting. |

There have been some quite spirited discussions concerning fillet weld....mld |

Both filled and full penetration welds are permissible for welded staybolts. We are utilizing fillet welds...no chamfered holes in the sidesheets. Rob Gardner ASR President and 2100 Project Manager |

Tom Payne left behind some parts of that locomotive at our locomotive rebuild facility in Tacoma... The conversion to oil was done in St Thomas, ON. The work that was done in Tacoma was boiler work done by a boiler company from Seattle. They were boiler specialists, but of course they don't get a lot of steam locomotive work, so they were kind of unfamiliar with things in that regard. So I'm not sure exactly what the parts were or where they would have come from. Possibly he did some further modifications to the oil burner system. Especially when it was first tried, changes weren't uncommon. |
