Someone stole the Woodward PG governor off Washington Terminal 59, stored in South Jersey. They were kind enough to cover the opening on the cam assembly with plastic and duct tape, to keep water out. It seems like they were planning to come back to steal more parts?

Needless to say, I'm pissed, and don't really expect an answer to my rhetorical question, although any leads would be appreciated. I do need information on what model PG governor, part number, etc. that a 1000 HP 6-539T should have, though.

I doubt it, but almost sounds like they were planning on only borrowing it. Have you talked to everyone slightly involved with the locomotive, to see if they remembered talking to someone working on a local ALCo?

Alternately was the unit functional? Might someone decided to just send it out for rebuilding??? Ive heard of weirder donation in kind reasons (if this was a museum locomotive).

This is where Grandfather will quote Yogi Bear, er, I mean Bera, that it is 'Deja vu all over again'.

This is has the feeling of being a rerun. Every once in a while someone gets lost in south Jersey, wanders into Salem thinking that they have found civilization again, and discovers a traumatized RS-1 which is being used to prevent the neighborhood children from falling into the PRR's old inspection pit. So -
1 - The poster is the owner of the unit.
2 - He is very familiar with the people working on ALCos in South Jersey because he is one of them.
3 - The operator over there who believed that he could help himself to parts of other people's stored equipment passed away a decade ago.
4 - Some of you may remember that he had to scrap a C-420 and a CF-7 because they had been so badly damaged from both vandalism and unauthorized parts harvesting, that putting them back in service wasn't feasible.

Down there the most likely market is for marine engines rather than restoring locomotives. However, If Rich is correct that this is a misunderstanding, back channel me and maybe we can help arrange its return...

Meghan, thanks for your thoughtful response, and for starting to set the record straight. A point here, which needs to be clarified, is the fact that I no longer own that engine. I sold it a few weeks ago, and the new owner made the discovery of the missing governor. He passed the information on to me over the weekend. I'm not being blamed; in fact I'm helping him source this and several other stolen parts.

Now that I no longer own the 59, I can do a little 'venting' that I was somewhat hesitant to do before. To be brief, however, the bottom line is that I was talked into an arrangement regarding two of my units (the Alcos) with an outfit, since sold, that turned out to have very questionable business ethics. I demanded the return of all three units, while they were still movable, and got nowhere.

I then had two different lawyers try to straighten things out, but it simply became an unworkable situation, at least with respect to what I was able to spend on legal fees; money that should have gone into preservation and restoration.

I have been advised to not use the other party's name here, but anyone following this saga knows who they are. Just be very cautious if you have to deal with them.
