FWIW, I happened to come across this tweet from the Virginia Dept of Transportation's Twitter account:
Quote:
Would you like to see an inactive railroad segment turned into a 48.5-mile multi-use recreational rail trail in the Shenandoah Valley?

Looks like there are still rails on it?

The line has been inactive for decades and is largely intact, although the rail in some grade crossings has been lifted or paved over in a few locations. Small trees have started to grow between the rails. NS, however, has not abandoned the line, and has indicated that it is not interested in parting with it. Until NS changes its mind, plans to convert the line into a trail seem rather premature.
