Jason Stamper combines family time with railfanning on a trip to Durbin, West Virginia, home of the Durbin and Greenbriar Railroad. Returning to black and white film for the first time in many years, Jason was able to reconnect with the joy of photography in the steam and smoke of bygone years.

Did you finish reading the caption of that photo before you posted this?

That caption doesn't mention the main reason stepping on a rail is a rule violation, which is that the top of the rail provides poor footing (it is smooth and it or your footwear often have grease on them), and the gauge is not a place you want to fall face first.

A nice read, thanks.

The place has a lot of flavor. I found that out on a 2015 visit with
the late Jack Neville. What really interested me was the other Heisler
in the yard, the 70 ton West Coast Special. That'd be a decent machine
for them if it ever got running it again.

Interesting that they are going to run all trains out of Cass. I remember Durbin being a little difficult to get to, but not as bad as Cass. I know Durbin does not have much for a shop or depot, but I would consider running from Durbin to Cass, possibly with a connection to go up to Whitaker. I don't know what the run time along the Greenbrier would be, and it would probably be a long day, but it would make for one hell of a trip!

Wasn't there talk of a "loup" originating out of Cass somehow?

Would almost think a rod engine would make more sense from cass to durbin on regular runs

Was this the reason BC & G # 4 was being restored?
