I'm not sure how many people here have seen this site, but it's definitely worth a visit. I've seen a lot of posts here about mystery equipment and what said equipment's number(s) and heritage might be. This site has a lot of answers to those questions.

If you don't know the number or railroad of a piece of equipment, you can type the name of the town where it's located in the search box in the top right and chances are a result will pop up.

Unfortunately this site seems to have disappeared. Did anyone save the data?

I believe Wil Hata (VinylRailfan here on RYPN) was running the site. Hopefully he sees this.
It was a super useful site and I hope it is simply only down for maintenance or a refresh.
Although, his signature here on RYPN now includes, "Railroad Preservation Index 2015-2021."

UPDATE: The Wayback Machine archived the site on August 30, 2021:

Sadly, the search function no longer works.

I found this website just this year and it quickly became one of my resources when labelling photographs in the detailed manner that I do or identifying former numbers of passenger cars.

I am not familiar with the Wayback Machine website and when I clicked on the link in the above posting, it said that the site had not been captured or archived.

It is my fervent hope that Mr. Hata will be able to continue providing this extremely useful site. It must have taken years to accumulate and keep up-to-date. Your efforts are very much appreciated.

There’s a notice posted on the home page:
Quote:
September 2021 - ?:
This version of Google Sites is closing down in September. That means, these pages will be going away. Figuring out what the future may hold, but for now, September will be the end for a while.

My guess this site was done on the “Classic Google Sites” which was finally deprecated in September.

It makes me wonder as we loose some of these useful sites, the Passenger Car Photo Index was another example, if it would behoove a group of us to somehow host and maintain this data on one specific host/site with open access to all to view. Currently, useful info is scattered around many sites, some of which are run by individuals, that may disappear at any moment.

It’s something to ponder. However, being a small community in the grand scheme might render that concept unobtainable.

As Eric, noticed, yes this was originally put together in what Google as termed Classic Sites, which was turned off/shut down/deactivated on September 1st. The site would still be live until they cleaned house, which was anywhere from 30-60 days after the 1st, at which point it would be removed. While still up, I no long had the ability to make any edits, so I just jumped ahead a bit and canned it all early.

I did port it over to the new version of Sites. And well, yikes, it's a hot mess. The formatting got all messed up (which for how simple a lot of the site was, it doesn't make a ton of sense) and every page needs a complete overhaul. The editing interface was simplified in this new version of Sites, but some of the previously useful tools are no long around so things are somehow now more difficult to edit. And to be honest, I'm not entirely inclined to use the new version.

So, in short, until I figure out if I want to move forward with the new version of if I want to do something entirely else, it's not going to be around. That and I needed a bit of a break from it anyway.
