Mr. Knebel told me last week that he was going to be repainting the roof of our display caboose; Illinois Central 9914. When I came to the museum yesterday (5/29/21) I was extremely surprised to see that not only did he repaint the roof, but he also repainted the badly fading side of the car!

The first photo shows the car as it appeared in August of 2020, the south facing side showing the weather effects since it was placed in 2014. The second photo shows the results of Marks recent work.

Bet it glows in the dark now. It ought to look real nice once Mark gets done.

Thanks Sammy! Mark was able to use our Lift on this side of the caboose, but with the tight clearance on the other side and no access, he's going to have to repaint that side using a ladder. A bit more difficult to say the least, but he is up to it!

Les,

Count me as one who loves to see freight cars and cabeese kept in such great shape and repainted and relettered with such attention to detail. Can you find out what the average cost is for these repaints? I'm assuming Mr. Knebel's time is a donation to HVRM as a member?

What brand and type of paint/primer does he use?

Sincerely,

Rob Gardner

Any plan to reopen those covered windows?

diningcartim -

When the caboose first came to Hoosier Valley, the two center windows on both sides and all of the cupola windows, had been covered with steel plates. When we eventually decided to use the caboose for displays, we opened the four cupola roof windows for interior light, but left the side cupola windows plated over thinking that the cupola "slope" might be a place where water could find its way in. We decided to leave the center windows on both sides covered as that would give us more "wall space" for displays.

I believe Mark has used Sherwin Williams "Equipment Orange" on this caboose.

Mark finished the opposite (north facing) side and the west platform of the caboose this past week, as can be seen in the photo below. Also, I mentioned that we decided not to open the two center windows on the caboose so we could use those walls for displays. The second photo shows how one side of a wall has been used in IC 9914.
