Not earning a commission, no financial interest, posting it here only for hopefully constructive commentary and discussion: https://www.railmover.com/home26885f84/ ... p383131362 Quote: Here is a rare opportunity to own a historic standard gauge steam locomotive. Very few complete steam locomotives exist today that have the potential to operate again on the mainline. Stored indoors for the last 65 years, you can restore this locomotive to all its glory A Baldwin, built in 1923 with 51 inch drivers and 21x26 cylinders. It weighed in at 137,000 pounds and produced a tractive force of 33,500. Email or call us for details. Given the current status of sister #6 in Indiana, I don't have a good feeling about this. |

#6 is in its current position because of the lap seam boiler it has. There have been rumblings every now and again about people fixing it up but I haven’t seen much showing it sees that much attention given the photographs I’ve seen in the past few years. #3 I believe doesn’t have this problem. Would work for most shorter tourist lines if restored to operation but its obvious home is the EBT, having sat in Mt Union for over 60 years without much movement if any (and still sitting there). I’m interested to see if any outsider wants it, or if the EBTF decides to purchase it themselves. |

When I hear of this locomotive, I remember reading how Kelly Anderson said the corrosion was terrible on this locomotive, even 30 years ago: https://www.rypn.org/forums/viewtopic.p ... 76#p299973 Quote: I agree. She has been sitting in that engine house for sixty-four years, and for a large part of that time the roof was seriously compromised, allowing rain in, but not much sunshine or air circulation. I remember looking her over thirty of so years ago, and the corrosion was incredible. I touched an exposed rivet head with my finger tip, and it fell off! I went to another, and the same thing happened!! I've never seen that before or since. I believe she still has insulation on the boiler, and coal in the tender, ouch!

Check out the current picture in that link - yes, this engine has been subject to a great deal of water damage over the years, and it also appears to have been a victim of vandalism and tagging. |

If I'm wrong or out of bounds, I apologize in advance. That being said, I've had a bad feeling about EBT for a while now. It hasn't been lost on me that trackwork has slowed to a crawl the last couple months. And then there's the resurrection of the K4 project. The main principles are the same in both groups. And now the foundation is selling the 3??? My question now is did the money man take his ball and go home? |

Progress does take time including the accumulation of donation and grant money. These things don’t happen overnight. And then there’s the nightmare of the last year and a half. I’m impressed with the progress made so far. And is the #3 owned by the foundation? |

And now the foundation is selling the 3??? My question now is did the money man take his ball and go home? From the very day that the sale was made official, the EBTF has stated that they never owned #3, and that it was sold by the Kovalchick family prior to their purchase of much of the EBT. So the sale of #3 is not from the EBTF but from whoever purchased it from the Kovalchick family, a figure that has never been publicly stated, but there are rumblings as to who this person is. Probably relating to the stillborn Mount Union Connecting RR. Less said about that the better. As for the track work, it’s still the summer and it’s been a very hot one. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re taking it easy for now because it has been such a tough summer due to the heat and humidity. They’ve had a lot of work to do in renovating the wye at Colgate Grove and if they haven’t finished it already, they’re just finishing it. I think I saw a post about it on their facebook as recently as about 3-4 weeks ago. They’ve also been focusing on several of the buildings, namely the carpentry shop and the storehouse next to the old stone farm house. Not to mention locomotives and rolling stock. The EBTF is fixing the problems that have existed with the ROW since the tourist era: it’s not just a simple tie and occasional rail replacement. Remember that not even a mile of it was open for tourist running this time last year. They only got to running to the Runk road bridge in the past couple of months. It’s going to take time for them to get it finished, not even including the hot summer. In my opinion there’s nothing to worry about at this time. Any projects they have currently ongoing are usually kept quiet by the people in charge, that’s been a trend ever since the EBT was resurrected. |

There is something odd going on about this locomotive. As soon as it was mentioned on the Fans of the EBT facebook group commenting was turned off. Someone doesn't want anyone talking about this locomotive for some reason. I was in to look at that locomotive a few years ago and yes it is HEAVILY corroded. Poor thing. |

It could also be a pre-emptive measure, to prevent the 1001 "it should stay here" or "restorize it and run it on the mainline" comments that usually show up... |

Eh, that’s not atypical to what they usually do. There isn’t very much discussion on the steam locomotives on that page because their reasoning is that can be a bit too much foam sometimes and it would result in the same questions being asked over and over again. Unless there’s a concrete update from the official EBT page there isn’t much in terms of discussion on the steamers over there. What is off to me is that I couldn’t find the post in Ahead of the Torch. I saw it earlier today, but I couldn’t find it when I checked to see if anyone had said anything different. Must’ve been deleted or something. |

THE SKY IS FALLING............RUN................RUN...............RUN !!!!! Everything at EBT is going well and the progress to date is simply amazing. With proven leaders Moorman,Levin & Posner totally committed to its full rebirth there's nothing to fret about. Won't be long 'till the sound of the steam whistle is heard there and trains are running regularly to the Grove and thereafter to the South. Please support this great effort with your time or treasure as you're able. Ross Rowland |

Note Eng 3 has Std Ga and Narrow Ga couplers. Probably 2 NG Couplers. Can switch both gauges without an idler car. Phil Mulligan |

Ross, your point is taken, but has nothing to do with the discussion at hand. It's been clearly established that the group behind the EBT revival does not own No. 3, and unless they acquire it, do not have a hand in its future. The party behind the sale has not made their intentions known, whether they're holding on to it until find it can be sold to a better home, or may look to dispose of it if they cannot find a buyer, or another of a myriad of possible reasons they could have made it available. -Sam |
