Post subject:  Electro-Motive EMS Numbers

I recently had a call from a preservation organization regarding Electro-Motive EMS numbers. Just for everyone's general information, these are an internal material specification system dating back to the 1930s. (EMS = Electro-Motive Material Specification). They are comparable to SAE, AISI and other industry material specification systems, but the EMS numbers are proprietary within EMD. I don't know of any published crossover tables. It is up to Progress Rail as to whether they want to identify it for a customer or not. Occasionally it is possible to estimate the material based on the welding rods specified in Maintenance Instructions.
