Good news for wreckers… We’ve been working on our 1952 IB 250T locomotive crane (B&O X-216) to get it back into operating condition. There have been a few modifications done to the fuel system previously that we’re trying to figure out. It’s equipped with two Cummins HB-600 industrial diesel engines. Does anyone have a copy of a service manual or any other useful data or can point us to where we can find info on these engines? I’ve inquired to Cummins but have yet to hear back but I’m not holding my breath. Thanks |

I'm decently familiar with these engines. What modifications are you seeing? I think the only major one is switching from the twin disk pump to the PT style pump. What problems are you having? |

I’m not the guy working on this project but I did notice that some lines to the pump (the twin disk I’m sure) are different between the engines. I don’t think we’re getting fuel into the pump. Might be that the emergency shutoffs are stuck. I’ll ask what the specifics are - might have to wait until Saturday for me to put an eyeball on it so I kinda understand what’s going on, though. |

The PT pump, the solenoid on top is what turns the engine on and off. There is also a mechanical version of that valve, operated by a cable. The little thumbscrew that points to the left, is a bypass, open it and the engine can't be shutdown unless you close the bypass. Most of those solenoids are power-to-run, but they did make a version that was power-to-kill, and I can only assume the thumbscrew would kill the engine, and prevent a start. The power-to-kill version is stamped with a big 'C' I think. Right below/next to the solenoid is a huge plug with a slot, there is a strainer under that plug. Whichever version you have, feed it clean fuel, even if you have to rig up a pump for now. |

We have clean, fresh fuel with new filters. Air filters cleaned and oiled. Lube oil and filters changed. The shutoff is cable operated and cables and assemblies have been cleaned & lubed. They also have a lever hand pump for priming which pumps up firm. Did the double disc pumps have this feature available or was that limited to the single disc? The engines are at least two years older than the PT pump introduction so I’m pretty sure they don’t have the PT. That would have been a big retrofit for the B&O as miserly as they were. I’ll have a better idea of what we have on Saturday when I can see it. |
