Hi there, does anybody know if any other equipment aside from American Aggregates 640 (C&LE 640) has been preserved or is still kicking around?(or any other information?) The only place I can manage to really scrape up some info on the super niche operation is either on the Dons Depot page, small snippets in TheDieselShop, or the Northeast railfan list which has a bunch more photos of the AA roster. Given some of the equipment which was built around the 30’s and 40’s lasted almost/into the 80’s I’d think there’s a good chance something still has to be around other than an Interurban car.

When American Aggregates converted the box motors from overhead wire to self-propelled, did the "locomotives" retain the interurban power trucks and electrical gear? How were they set up?

It's a beast, Wes. You crank an engine to crank the diesel. Once you have the diesel cranked and running, you use the interurban controller to select the direction and put it in a full series or full parallel position. Then using a piece of pipe hanging from the ceiling and linked to the diesel's throttle, you pull back on the pipe, the diesel revs up, and you start to roll.....

Wear ear protection if you have a chance to try it out.

Edit: thinking back I seem to remember a pipe you put on a stub through a slot in the floor as well and shoved forward or back. so perhaps that was the reverser? Long time ago. I was on a survey trip for the world's most modern 0-6-0 at the time and a bit overwhelmed.

According to the blog entry below, ex-C&LE freight motors rebuilt by AA retained their trucks and motors, but everything else – controllers, contactors, reversers, etc – was removed when they were rebuilt as diesel-electrics. There’s more information here, including a complete roster.
