I am preparing a grant narrative for the Milwaukee Railroad Shops Preservation Project in Sioux City, Iowa. Part of my narrative will discuss the national loss of railroad roundhouse complexes and engine terminals. Unfortunately, I have not kept a real good record of posts that have mentioned lost roundhouses or engine terminals.

If you know of a lost roundhouse or engine terminal, whether it was demolished or collapsed, could you please email me the city and state location, as well as the railroad's name.

In addition,we are getting ready to roll out our email newsletter. If you wish to subscribe to the newsletter please email me with subscribe in the subject line. Our first issue will be sent out shortly with updates on the GN 1355 (4-6-2) estoration project

Thank you.

A recent (and MILW related) loss I can name of the top of my head is the destruction of Milwaukee's main teminal/shop in the chicago area, Bensonville, last winter. Here is a short list from the last few years, thinking of them all makes one realize the staggering losses in railroad history we've suffered in the last couple of years.

+There is also the old WM Hagerstown, MD roundhouse that was torn down about 2 or 3 years ago.

+The GB&W shops in Milwaukee, Wis.

+Soo Line roundhouses in Harvey, ND and Superior, Wis.

+AT&SF roundhouse at Redondo Jct. in the Los Angles area.

+SP Taylor engine terminal and shops in Los Angles, which is being torn down as we speak.

This a depressing list, but let's be thankful for what we have been able to save though.

Larry, I sugust that you get in direct touch with Bob Yarger. He loves to post on round houses and other railroad structures, expecially engine houses in out of the way places.

The following URL is for lost Santa Fe Roundhouses, personally I think that the Redondo and Belen structures were the biggest loss (aside from 2925 and 5021 leaving their protective homes to sit outside to rot away unprotected from vandals and souveneir hunters.
