Has anybody contacted a RR company for saving older crossing signals on a piece of track they are pulling up?

Many times, although more typically railfans are after the older signage than the signals themselves.

If one is ingenious enough to do the necessary repair work, a lot can be had by cruising and perusing the railroads' signal dumps, once one knows where to look. I have rescued several crossing signs and signals on behalf of museums and preservationists by watching for short lines to replace ancient crossing signs and signals, and arranging for either donation, sale, or donation for sale with the proceeds to go to a preservation group. More than once I have even "stolen" the railroad's trash out of the dumpster in order to get parts for reuse or insulators for sale.

The pickings, however, are getting much slimmer these days..........

Used to be a stack of wigwags at Spencer Shops.

The CSX signal maintaining shops in Savannah - parts of what was the ACL shops site, only the signal maintainers left and a former freight house now a restaurant supply - has a collection of various signals on display in the parking lot.

There used to be a fair amount of stuff on the old B&O/ Pennsy Panhandle main just after you crossed the bridge in Newark, Ohio. Its on the east side of town down near where the old B&O shops and Roundhouse were. I have a Crouse-Hinds Yard Spotlight that fell down off the light tower that one of the retired B&O guys got for me. By the way, anybody know where you can get replacement glass for one of those? ;-) This was within the past five years.
