Sorry, this is too much fun.

Check out this photo of the still active rail yards in Durand, Michigan. The outline of the roundhouse radials and foundation is clearly visible, as it the turntable, still in place in 1992. I saw the turntable before it was removed on a summer vaction excursion, but the roundhouse outline was invisible to me in the bursh on the ground.

The turntable is since removed. Pan to the left and you'll see the coaling tower, still there as far as I know.

The Durand roundhouse was razed early, just about a year after Grand Trunk Western steam stopped running in 1960. Others lasted longer, with Pontiac being lost within the last two years. Alas, now there's no historic place to put surviving GTW steam... The book "Evening Before the Diesel" has some great photos of what used to be.

You might want to look at Port Huron as well as Durand. the turntable is still in Port Huron (circa December 2002 anyway), as are what's left of the Car Shops. This is a great idea!

Check out the display below of the Pere Marquette/ Chesapeake & Ohio yard at Port Huron. The long thin strip along the eastern shore of the yard running north-south in the river is the PERE MARQUETTE 10, last operated as a tug-barge operation in 1995.
