The Southern California RR Museum is restoring SF560, a FM H12-44. We now have the engine running very nicely and are ready to start planning for the paint job. It appears that we will need about $20,000 more to finish the project. This will be a very rare operational locomotive. If you are in the Southern California area, stop by any Saturday and ask for me, Dave Althaus. Would love to brief you on the project. All donations are tax deductible. When you donate, make sure to annotate your check for Fund M56. Or you can donate directly using this url. https://socalrailway.org/collections/sa ... 0-details/ |

RYPN Members, I had the good fortune to visit the Southern California Railroad Museum last November. In a word, their collection of vintage diesels is AMAZING. Every one of their restored diesels is finished to an incredible level. It’s not just the fancy paint job on the outside; the interior restoration is impeccable too. It also goes beyond esthetics: The team in “Diesel Service” looks at each and every component and system and brings them all back to like-new condition—or even better. The restoration of this Fairbanks Morse H12-44M is not just another diesel restoration. What makes this unique is the scarcity of FM diesels out there. Parts are hard to find, and when parts are found, the cost is 2 to 4 times the price of a similar EMD part. SO, nudge, nudge! Please make a donation to this great project. Maybe Mr. Wrinn can have his fine folks over at TRAINS magazine give them an endorsement too? Thanks, Scott Kwiatkowski |

How are parts hard to find for an engine that is in current production? The OP is the auxilliary power for US submarines. |

You are right about the FM being current backup power in U S Navy submarines, but that is a totally different engine. About the only things they have in common, is they were built by FM and they have the same bore and stroke. There have been many changes and upgrade to the FM engine since the SCRM locomotive was built. The marine engine uses 4 injectors, so there are 4 ports in the liner for them and not 2. The main problem facing the SCRM, is the cost of the new style injectors and the fact that the old style is not made anymore. |
