Post subject: Ex-B&O E8 to Bennett Levin
PostPosted: Sat Sep 21, 2002 9:59 pm

Ex B&O E8 #36 was de-accessed by the B&O Museum and moved Thursday to S. Philly Shared Assets yard on CSX Tr. #Q40619 from Mt. Clare Baltimore. It has been bought by Bennett Levin's Juniata Terminal Company, owner of PRR PV #120, and the ex-CR E8's painted PRR. Don't know plans for unit, although it's in such rough shape that using it for parts for the operable ones seems likely. Museum does have another B&O E8 that appears to be a better candidate for restoration.

I know about this because I just happened to be the conductor on Q406, and as luck would have it, had just put my travel camera with a fresh roll of K-200 in it in my grip, so the move is documented for posterity.

In a sort of related note, the CSX officials in Baltimore had no idea that the AARPCO convention was coming to town in late October until I asked a trainmaster where they were going to keep the cars while they were in town. I guess Jacksonville was going to spring it on them about a week beforehand. Mind you this event also includes two live inbound passenger specials and at least one excursion on the Old Main Line!

The reason the local CSX might not have all the details is that the planning call from AMTRAK to CSX took place this past Wednesday afternoon. Don't be too harsh on the folks in JAX! These trains operate as AMTRAK passenger specials and the planning has been going on for at least a year.

The cars will be parked at the B&O museum. There will be two incoming trains and two departures. If conditions permit both incoming trains will operate via the "Old Main Line". On Tuesday the 22nd there will be a special from Pittsburgh, and on Wednesday the 23 the Special from Chicago will arrive.

On Sunday October 27 the first train will depart Baltimore for Perryville via Washington. From Perryville it will travel the Port Road to Harrisburg, the Buffalo Line to Keating, and RJ Corman to Clearfield. On the 28th it will depart Clearfield for Cresson and then continue directly to Chicago.

The second train will leave the museum and go to Philadelphia via the "Royal Blue Route".

Both CSX and NS have been most cooperative in the planning of these trains. AMTRAK has made a specific effort to insure the seamlees operation of these trains on both NS and CSX. The RJ Corman RR and the people in Clearfield PA have gone out of their way to plan special events for both trains.

These trains are a combined AAPRCO/Clearfield RR Heritage Week event.

BTW, detailed information is available on the Harrisburg NRHS web site.

Wonder if there's any possibility of doing a cosmetic restoration of this usnit? Mr. Levin has done a wonderful job of restoring the two Pennsy E8's. BTW, B&O #36 is an E9A.>

I am not sure, Bennett did not address this, but I believe he is only storing the locomotive, I do not believe he or his companies own it.

Blame it on sleep deprivation, the move was on Friday, not Thursday. Since this is sort of a board of record I figured I should correct that. Anyone who has been in the business for awhile knows the feeling - the only day that matters is payday!

Could Mr. Levin (or somebody) please provide details as to the future plans for this unit. It is my understanding that it is now owned my Ed Bowers, who purchased it from the B&O museum. I have heard many rumors that the unit will be cut soon.

Mr. Levin is no doubt all-consumed by the planning and execution of several mainline trips with his PRR E8s; therefore I am taking the opportunity to respond:

I have e-mailed him a couple times regarding this locomotive once it had moved. He is remaining tight-lipped about the actual circumstances, but rest assured that scrapping is NOT planned.

The unit, I can tell you, was perhaps in the most horrible condition of any E-unit I have ever seen, save for an E7B at Striegel Scrap in the 1980s that had entire side panels rusted off. Substantial repairs to the brake lines had to be carried out before the unit could even leave the B&O Museum.

There are rumors--and let me stress, they are ONLY RUMORS--that the shop forces at Juniata Terminal are intent on rebuilding this unit into a "E8B" to match the PRR duo! If they turn out to be true, I cannot think of a better loco to turn into a kitbash project than this one. There are other rumors about, but the most I could get out of Levin was a wry smile and "Rumors are very interesting, aren't they?"

I am told we'll find out soon enough what they plan for that unit--if anything--but for now, I suggest we lay off Mr. Levin and just give him a big "thumbs up" as we watch his units on the main line and Clearfield branches this month.

The Truth:

I heard from someone "in the know" that the B&O E-8 is going to be turned into a Reading T-1. It will then be painted for the Chessie Steam Specials and operate every third Tuesday at the East Broad Top. It's true!

The Question:

I've seen this E unit. Wow. If anyone has the resources to complete any plan, go to it!

It's the second forlorn E to come to the attention of this board recently. I do not think it will be the last.

I am thoroughly convinced that we all need to knock back a stiff belt of Yoo-Hoo and get ready for the next few years.

We are at a crossroads, and time is finally having its way with us. There are too many rusted hulks and too few resources to save them. I guarantee you that the number of pre-1960 locomotives in the US is going to decrease significantly in the next decade.

There is no feasible way to stop it.

So, what are we going to do about it?

That's the question.

I'm thinking about changing my name to McIntyre....And about the E-9 hulk, its official status is "SET ASIDE-PENDING DISPOSITION", but it may go to the 098 "BACKSHOP WORKLOAD"....Keep one thing in mind, the 4020 and 4021 were just a little bit better then this piece of junk when Conrail got them from Amtrak for some even worse SW's. In the immortal words of Charlie Medovich "Let me worry about it".

(Eric - I think that your reply has to be the most cryptic yet seen on RYPN. With your skills you should consider leaving Conrail and working for the NSA)

It appears as though the Mad River & Nickel Plate Railroad Museum at Bellevue, OH is attempting to restore a unit that is (arguably) in much rougher condition. The photo below is by Arnold Morscher, and is dated 6/13/01. The unit is EMD E8, Former numbers: NYC 4069- PC 4069- PC 4321. It was stored in the late 90Â’s at Logansport, Indiana. Who owned the unit before it came to Bellevue? How much progress has been made on restoring it?

Let's recount: The B&O unit in reference was missing both engines and all traction motors. In addition, some of the "cancer" that will readily destroy an E-unit is hiddem bemeath the surface. Specifically, I refer to body rot below the sandboxes fore and aft (when sand is left to gather moisture and hold it like a sponge) and in the lower truss junctions along the bottom of the frame (several E-unit owners have reverted to cutting drain notches to reduce rust at these critical points).

Is it true that the Juniata Terminal Co. is going to graft the nose from the "hulk" onto the remaining unrestored EP22a (E8) to build a Jersey Central double ender?

I don't know who this McIntyre fellow is or why Eric wants to change his name, but when I had the chance to go through the Juniata Terminal shop last year with a group from the NS there was a EMD 16-645E sitting on the shop floor. I wonder what that could be for. Maybe a UP E-38-2 conversion? I work with a guy who is tight with Eric and he can't get anything out of him on his plans, or he has been sworn to secrecy. I asked him what the "098" might mean, its a former Conrail term that refers to a list of units undergoing heavy repair at Altoona, so I think it would be a good sign if it made that list. Whatever is done to the unit you can all rest assured if it comes out of Juniata Terminal it will be a work of art, these people really know how to do it up right.

According to a post on Trainorders (below), B&O E9 36 was scrapped today (11/2/2020), along with a PRR N8 and a yet-to-be identified PRR RPO.

According to these photos, the equipment was tipped off their trucks last week:
