Nevada State Railroad Museum, Carson City, Nevada is planning an event to be staged July 1 - 4, 2022. The following locomotives are planned to participate:

• Virginia & Truckee 1, 2-6-0 (Strasburg Railroad Shops ? / 2009), "Lyon," standard gauge, replica
• Virginia & Truckee 11, 4-4-0 (M. Baird & Co 2816 / 1872), "Reno," standard gauge, not serviceable
• Virginia & Truckee 18, 4-4-0 (Central Pacific Railroad / Sacramento 6 / 1873), "Dayton," standard gauge, not serviceable
• Virginia & Truckee 22, 4-4-0 (BLW 3693 / 1875), "Inyo," standard gauge
• Virginia & Truckee 25, 4-6-0 (BLW 25016 / 1905), standard gauge
• Virginia & Truckee 27, 4-6-0 (BLW 39453 / 1913), standard gauge, not serviceable (in Virginia City)
• Santa Cruz Portland Cement 2, 0-4-0ST (H.K. Porter 4390 / 1909), standard gauge
• Carson & Tahoe Lumber & Flume 1, 2-6-0 (BLW 3712 / 1875), "Glenbrook," 3-foot gauge
• Eureka & Palisade 4, 4-4-0 (BLW 3763 / 1875, 3-foot gauge

The event website is awful and not very user friendly. The header is huge and the content portion is only a tiny sliver at the bottom that is hard to read as I scroll through.

He's right, this is pretty difficult to read. However, I am excited for this event. It's a gathering not seen in North America in quite some time now.

During that time, railfans will also be able to see 1 or 2 more locomotives under steam in Virginia City! Hopefully the V&T will run some specials out of Carson City to cater to the railfans who will be visiting the area.

This will be a really special event! I won’t miss it!

During the Iron Horse Round-up -- maybe on the first train I rode -- I ran into two young men who did not strike me as railfans.

I talked with them and found out that they were from Carson City and were attending the VIHR to get ideas for an upcoming event in at the railroad museum in Carson City. I asked who they were with and I received a business cards from one of the men and it identified him as "Event & Sales Manager" with "Visit Carson City."

"Visit Carson City" is a local a tourism promotion organization with a board made up of three tourism reps, a city council member, and a Public citizen. His position is currently vacant at the organization's list of staff on its website.

I learned about this event a few days ago, and I was surprised to see so many locomotives involved in this event. My friend and I were under the impression that this event promises all of the participating locomotives listed to be under steam.

I am not sure of the latest status of all of the listed locomotives, but in the photos, it appears that a few of them are museum pieces. Additionally, Lyon was accepted by Carson City in an incomplete state with the goal of having it "completed for the 150th anniversary of the V&T in 2022" (per https://carsonrailroadmuseum.org/railroad-museum-accepts-full-sized-replica-of-vts-first-locomotive/).

Per the NSRM Friends website, it appears that Dayton is a cosmetically restored museum piece on display at the Comstock History Center. V&T #27 is on display at the Museum, also.

It's quite possible that the above sources I just shared are out of date and these locomotives have been operationally restored, but does not seem to be the case with a quick google search.

So, lots of details yet to be shared, and perhaps clarification would be good. The display pieces are a good accompaniment but I'm not sure they should be listed in the roster for the Steam-Up, if they're not going to be steamed up - at least, not without a note indicating such.

The Reno, Dayton, and #27 won’t be under steam.

Hopefully the website improves a little bit. This will be an amazing event!

It seems like a lot of details remain to be shared, made more difficult by the website's poor design.

As mentioned above, the website advertises "over 10 operating steam locomotives" but a little research shows the following engines as currently non-operable:

1. V&T Lyon -- still under construction (goal of operation)
2. V&T Reno -- recently acquired (2021) by modern-day V&T for restoration to operation
3. V&T Dayton -- not operable, "[boiler] would require replacing for the engine to operate"
4. V&T #27 -- not operable, on display at Comstock History Center

So.. largest gathering of V&T steam, 6 operable engines. No small feat, definitely deserves to be applauded!

Operable engines include:

1. Inyo
2. Glenbrook
3. V&T #25
4. Eureka
5. SP #18
6. "Chiggen" (announced but not listed on the website for some reason?)

... but what is advertised does need to be revised.

It seems to me like there’s a disconnect between the advertisement that’s listed with locomotives like the chiggen, NCNG #5, and Cortez Mining Anne Marie, and what’s listed under the detailed “locomotive” section. But it might not be incorrect either

What tips me off? NCNG #5. This locomotive is still under restoration but is nearing completion. Their Facebook update from about two weeks ago says they want a steam up in May.

They have expressed much interest in letting the locomotive being in company with its twin, the beautifully restored Glenbrook. So I would not be the least bit surprised if #5 ends up in Carson City around Independence Day.

My guess is that the full list of advertised locomotives might be a bit premature. They still might be getting several of the logistics sorted out.
