Post subject:  CNJ Enginehouse, Mauch Chunk, Pa.

The 1860s Central RR of NJ Enginehouse at Mauch Chunk, now Jim Thorpe, (not a true roundhouse) had at least two dozen stalls through much of its existence. It survived into the early 1970s, and even stabled George Hart's CPR 4-6-0 D10j No. 972 in 1971-72. The 100' turntable is still intact and owned by Hart; it has turned several steamers inthe fan trip era, most notably 972, 1098, SRC 90 and High Iron's NKP Berk No. 759. Some of the walls of the building are still visible, though obstructed by the Carbon and Schuylkill's one-stall metal enginehouse building. One of the pit tracks was used by Hart for No. 1098, Hart's current steam loco (out of service). The facility had a quarter section of an 1860s CNJ wooden coach used as a yard office. It was donated to the Railroad Museum of PA in 1970 but due to advanced deterioration, it was disassembled in the early 1980s.
