Mentioned on the Trains Magazine forum:

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1904-cagney-class-e-15-in-gauge-steam-train/

Please, no snarky comments. Mods: move this to the classifieds after a couple of days.

Hi bid was $37,000 but it didn’t meet the reserve. Well this year that’s all it’s worth but next year maybe it will be worth $50,000 or maybe only $25,000.

Nice looking locomotive overall, but having the jacketing go over the smokebox just plain looks wrong. Took me a minute to figure out what was so funny looking, then it dawned on me and now I can't unsee it.

Not the first such Cagney I've seen. Don't know whether it was common "aftermarket" practice or "as built," but......

I tend to keep track of Cagneys. The jacket over the smoke box is normal for a Cagney, but there are usually bands that break things up a bit (see attached). It does look odd now without the boiler bands. The steam dome cover on this one is not normal Cagney and the injectors are not in their normal location either. They are normally located in front of the cab with the plumbing coming out of the dome. Looks like a new boiler as well. Stack is not original. This one has brakes, not many of them did.

Since so much has been modified, and it came with coaches made by Wasatch, I'm going to guess, and it's only a guess, that the engine was one of the ones that Wasatch rebuilt. I'll not open that can of worms.

I wonder who did the boiler for it?

Per the ASME repair tag located on the backhead, the boiler was last repaired in June, 1997 by Colorado Boiler. That's two years before Wasatch was even an entity. Had WRC done any real repair work to the boiler beyond maitenance, they would have been required to mark it as such, similar to what you see- by who, when, and with the required ASME stamp information (Job number, ASME repair stamp number, ect.).

That opens a can of worms if someone had done repair work and not documented it, but that can can be opened on ANY boiler or pressure vessel, not just because WRC was involved with rebuilding this engine at one point. A "rebuild" doesnt necessarily mean the boiler was repaired. Let's not get all excited and jump to conclusions about it. There's zero evidence in the sale listing that says they did.

Personally, I'm doubtful WRC worked on the boiler to any extent that would have required an R stamp. The only way to see if that happened, such as in the case a repair tag was removed or destroyed, would be to get the boilers original serial number and information, and track down any available information on its repair history with the ASME and/or NBIC. Or request a copy of the repair records from the company you think may have done repair work on it. That's a lot of effort that I wouldn't go through unless I was trying to buy a boiler myself.

More on topic, it's a very pretty engine. Unfortunately Cagneys always seen to have an over- inflated asking price for what they are. But that's just my opinion. Are there any records on Cagney's original factory paint colors?

Thanks for the information. I imagine a site dedicated to selling cars (bring a trailer) was probably ill-suited to selling a live steam locomotive. It's not targeting the right group of buyers, who would want to see things, such as copies of the paperwork for the boiler, etc.
