To allow cooling water to drain from the top deck water manifold, the EMD 567C and 567D series diesel engines use cylinder head siphon tube discharge elbows mounted on the last cylinder head on the right bank side of the engine and the first cylinder head on the left bank side. The other cylinder positions are equipped with short cylinder head discharge elbows. The correct positions for cylinder head siphon tube discharge elbows are as follows: Six-Cylinder Engines: Cylinders 3 and 4 Eight Cylinder Engines: Cylinders 4 and 5 Twelve Cylinder Engines: Cylinders 6 and 7 Sixteen Cylinder Engines: Cylinders 8 and 9 Cylinder head siphon tube discharge elbows are only used on 567C and 567D engines. They are not used on the earlier 567 series engines, which have internal top deck water manifold drains. They are also not used on 645 or 710 series engines. Failure to install the siphon tubes in the recommended cylinder positions can result in water being left in the top deck water manifold when the engine is drained. This can cause irreparable damage if the water in the manifold freezes. Later production 645 engine cylinder head water outlets with two seal grooves should never be mistaken with or installed on 567C or 567D engines. The top deck of the water manifold on these engines is not as thick as the structure on a 645 engine. The seals on a two-seal outlet do not position properly in 567C or 567D engines. Preston, is it possible to install or modify a 567A or 567B to accept these siphon tubes? Is there any EMD MI that discusses this? Thanks, -Andy Kromer |

Andy, There is unfortunately no modernization available to use the later cylinder heads and water outlets on the 567U, 567V, 567A, and 567B engines. They can only be modified to use the later style cylinder liners with water jumpers (UC, VC, AC, and BC conversion respectively), and that was normally a factory rebuild conversion. There was an MI 1803 (Feb. 1951, old numbering system) that deals with weld repairs of top deck water drain pipes on the early 567 engines. This MI is very hard to find, and its place in the numbering system was later assigned to an MI 1803 covering weatherstrip application. There is no comparable weld repair MI in the new numbering system. EMD eliminated most of their MI's covering welding, turning them into internal ESFR (Engineering Specification for Rebuild) documents following the renumbering in the mid-1950s. ESFR documents were not normally given out and are rarely encountered. PC |

The 567BC modification was introduced and applied to very late production 567B engines, and was subsequently also made available on rebuilds of 567U, 567V, and 567A engines. It allowed the converted engines to use the 567C cylinder liners which had coolant provided through water jumpers rather than a lower water deck. This reduced the possibility of water leaks plus allowed earlier engines to use later production parts. This modification required installing 567C lower liner seats and 567C cooling manifolds and water jumpers in the water deck area of the earlier engines. Because this required precision welding and machining it was done as a factory re-manufacturing service. PC |
