I remember reading somewhere that there were more than the 4 Illinois Central's ex-CB&Q E9 locomotives. One of them was scrapped in 2000 when Canadian National officially took over. What were the fates of the rest of the ex-CB&Q E9s from the Illinois Central? And what is the identity of the E9 scrapped by CN? |

Canadian National still rosters the #102 & the #103, repainted in a version of the modern CNR color scheme (Originally after restoration they wore a version of the handsome 1950's green CNR scheme). I believe they entered service after restoration as Canadian National units and never were officially rostered by the IC, but had been purchased along with the others by the Illinois Central. Illinois Central #100 was retired a decade or so back after remaining on the IC and in the modern IC executive scheme after the Canadian National acquisition. Was sold to Iowa Pacific, repainted in the 1950's Illinois Central paint scheme that their E units wore back in the day, and was serving as San Luis and Rio Grande #100. Not sure of her current status in the wake of the Iowa Pacific implosion. Also retired around the same time was Illinois Central #101 (which had likewise stayed on the IC after the CNR acquisition), which was also sold to Iowa Pacific. But unlike her sister, this one stayed in her modern IC executive colors at Iowa Pacific. Last I heard, she was stored in Kokomo, IN. Unsure of her current status. Never finished was ex BN #9914. Last I saw of her in I think 2003 or 2004, she was sitting at Homewood in primer with her side panels removed. Clearly she was intended for restoration judging by the work that had been done on her, but plans had changed and they decided that they didn't need a 5th E unit. I assume she has since been scrapped. As a side note, while widely known as E9's, I believe all four of the units that were restored by IC/CN were actually constructed as E8's. But after their rebuild by MK in the 1970's, no distinction was made and they were all classified as E9's. The #9914 would've been the exception, having been built as an E9. |

I saw photos of that one on the move just this week. It was bought by Aberdeen, Carolina & Western. |
