If you look on the Google Doodle for May 2, it's an interesting train-related one, click on it and discover the story of Elijah McCoy, a Canadian-American black inventor who patented steam locomotive lubrication systems. As many times as I've looked at those, the guy that invented them was never mentioned. And because his invention was copied, not entirely all that well, the phrase 'the real McCoy' appears to be credited to his product, perhaps legend, perhaps not. Years ago at the Henry Ford I sat under a tree as a man who called himself Elijah McCoy told the story about how he invented the locomotive lubricator. A thoroughly enjoyable experience. |
