Modern railfans tend to concentrate on what's remaining. For more fun, look to the northeast to follow the track curving behind the roundhouse. This is the Hot Springs branch to the Montezuma Hotel, recently restored, and beyond to the dams and ice lakes. The branch was once electrified as part of the Las Vegas street car system and was used by New Mexico's one and only electric freight motor. South along the main tracks was the site of the Santa Fe Railroad's early tie treating plant, a pioneer facility of the 1880's. To the north of the roundhouse you will find the remnants of extensive freight yards. Surviving buildings, however, include the passenger depot and the Castaneda Hotel. Roundhouse, two Harvey Houses and a still-active passenger depot make Las Vegas a must stop for the traveling railfan. vglover@nmia.com |
