After about a month of work I have completed installation of straight air brakes, air sanders and a diesel bell to the J&LNG 58. Since we do not have an appropriately sized steam driven air pump to mount on the locomotive I installed a Honda driven air compressor inside the tender. A main reservoir line runs forward to the cab, through a feed valve to an S-3 straight air valve to a pair of 6" brake cylinders up under the steam cylinders. This provides braking for the front drivers, a similar arrangement is yet to be constructed for the rear axle. Train brakes will also function off of the the straight air system.

The sanders are off of a Dash 9 and only applied to the front wheelset. The diesel bell's provenance is unknown. None of this equipment was original to the locomotive and has been installed to provide safe operations on our railroad. J&LNG 58 is NOT technically a restoration due to the changes we have made, however when J&LNG 57 is eventually restored that will be an historically accurate restoration.

We have a Youtube channel where these and other improvements to the 58 are discussed. https://www.youtube.com/c/YoungstownSteelHeritage

Thanks to everyone who provided components to us to help make this installation a reality.

Sanders might help if he has to stop in a hurry...

She will spin the drivers on wet rail. Those giant cylinders are more than a match for the adhesion to the rail.

Under the right conditions, exceptionally so. The current timing issues exacerbate it a bit- when it breaks loose it's almost always during the off-square chuffs.

This past weekend with dry rail, even with a heavy train of steel mill junque on the drawbar, I didn't experience slip at all.

We just need more tonnage to pull, that is all!
