Post subject:  EMD Apparatus Instruction (AI) Definition

Sharing here the answer to a recently received question about what an EMD Appartus Instruction document (AI) is, and how it differs from an EMD Maintenance Instruction (MI):

An EMD Engineering Apparatus Instruction (AI) is an Engineering Department document that explains the procedures for performing repairs or adjustment on various types of equipment. I did not explain this document family in the long-ago RYPN article on EMD publications (see RYPN articles section) because the AI is not a publicly issued document, although one might occasionally show up in employee collections or in railroad shop documentation of specific projects or upgrades.

The AI is usually the "grandfather" document for an EMD Service Department Maintenance Instruction (MI) document covering the related procedures. However, while the MI will usually only cover equipment that is still commercially available and being rebuilt, the AI will usually cover corresponding equipment far back into the history of production. Some AI documents have cover dates back in the 1930s and have been expanded and amended many times over the years.

There are no publicly issued books of EMD Apparatus Instructions and encountering them is very rare. There are also other Engineering Department documents called Engineering Specifications For Rebuilding (ESFR) and Electro-Motive Material Specifications (EMS) which are equally rare and not normally given out to customers.
