UPDATE: The "announcement" post at the WMSR Facebook page from where the quote and photos were lifted has subsequently been removed/deleted.............

Just announced on Facebook:

Quote:
Western Maryland Scenic would like to announce the arrival of the newest addition to our diesel roster.
In partnership with Northern Illinois & Wisconsin Railway dba NIWX Corporation and McHugh Locomotive & Equipment, ex-NS B32-Dash 8, numbered NIWX 558 will be calling WMSR home for a while.
It is wonderful to work with many businesses and organizations to continue sharing history and tourism experiences with everyone that visits Allegany County, the Mountain Side of Maryland.
Look for updates on No. 558 as she is prepared for service over the next few weeks here at WMSR.

This arrangement was worked out a few months ago between John Howell of Northern Illinois & Wisconsin Railway/NIWX Corporation, JC McHugh of McHugh Locomotive & Equipment, and Wesley Heinz of WMSR. The WMSR is a great operation and NIWX and McHugh Locomotive have worked hard to make this happen and are dedicated to seeing WMSR succeed. Once this locomotive enters service it will allow other planned maintenance to be completed on their other diesel locomotives.

WMSR will be painting and lettering the locomotive in the near future. Not speaking on behalf of the railroad, but in general with any historic operation, if you have a paint scheme suggestion, send it along accompanied by a generous donation. The generosity of John Howell and JC McHugh have gotten them this far with the diesel fleet.

Maybe it won't work out. But maybe seeing if it does will be the best adventure ever.

That brings them up to 4 useable diesels?

2x gp30s, the F40, then this?

Seems a pair of gp38s or a couple more f40s would be great for them.

A Garratt would be better.

Since the NS paint scheme is mostly black, a modified version of the WM fireball might be in order.

The original FB post referenced in my first thread of this post has been deleted, for whatever reason..........

Are there other four-motor GEs of this horsepower currently preserved in running order?

The Lake Shore Railway Museum in North East, PA has a preserved NS B32-8, but it's not serviceable. I think that is the only one from that fleet of locomotives that is preserved.

Regardless of what "the metaverse" does or doesn't say, the first post in this thread is correct. I might add that NWIX picked up the tab for moving the #558 to Cumberland, just one more bit of help to a most worthy cause.

I've had so many people that claim to be in the know tell me the F40PH weren't appropriate for tourist railroads. It's too bad that the f40s they do have though are one of the ugly chopped nose mod jobs.

So much better than the "please put me out of my misery" F40.
