Great Western Steam-Up at NSRM >>>Photo Album<<<

Folks,

As mentioned in an earlier thread, I was fortunate to be able to attend the 4-day, "Great Western Steam-Up" event at the Nevada State Railroad Museum over the July 4th weekend. This event featured 16 total steam locomotives, 9 of which were in steam and running on the museum trackage. It was probably the greatest gathering of steam engines that I have personally witnessed and probably the closest that we can come to some of the Railfairs that were held at the end of the last century.

The following is a list of the engines that were present. The ones in bold print were actually operating:

-V&T #1 "Lyon" (partially completed replica)
-V&T #11 "Reno"
-V&T #12 "Genoa"
-V&T #18 "Dayton"
-V&T #21 "J.W.Bowker"
-V&T #22 "Inyo"

-Carson & Tahoe Lumber & Fluming Co. #1 "Glenbrook"
-Eureka & Palisade #4 "Eureka"
-Nevada County Narrow Gauge RR #5 "Tahoe"
-Southern Pacific #18
-Bluestone Mining & Smelting #1 (Heisler)
-Santa Cruz Portland Cement #2 "Chiggen"
-Dardanelle & Russellville #8
-Dayton, Sutro & Carson Valley "Joe Douglas"
-Antelope & Western #1

As promised last week, I've sorted through a couple of thousand images that I captured at the event and picked the ones I thought best represented the action that I witnessed. Apologies for taking nearly a week to get these out. I'm a big believer in captioning my photos and it takes a bit of time to do that with a collection this large.

Anyway, if the spirit moves you, take a look. As has been said several times here, it was an epic event.

Thanks Kevin for sharing your wonderful photos of that great event. Sure was special seeing all those locomotives together and entertaining so many folks.

Also, hearty congratulations to all whose hard work produced such a completely successful event which no doubt gave birth to many new steam lovers.

This is a GREAT photo album, Kevin. I’ve just started to go through my images and will have some to share…eventually. It was a fantastic event.

When's the last event that had 9 or more locomotives in Steam?

In 1986, we had SteamExpo with an amazing 17 locomotives in Steam. That's a record that will possibly never be broken again.

I don't recall how many locomotives were at Railfair 81, anyone had a count?

Steam Railroading Institute hosted Train Expo 2014 in Owosso, Michigan with 8 steam locomotives. (Were all 8 under steam?)

Anyone know of any other events that had a large number in steam?

The Steamtown grand opening in 1995 had, I believe, 7 in steam. CP 2317, CN 3254, Baldwin Locomotive Works 26, Susquehanna 142, Milwaukee Road 261, RBM & N 425, and a Lowville and Beaver River Shay whose number I can't recall.
