RDC Spicer Gearbox Assembly Drawings Wanted

Hi All,

If anyone has good drawings for the Spicer drive gearbox commonly found on Budd RDCs, please shoot me a PM.

(No... the WW&F is not getting a Budd Car. Or are we?)

There is no room for that thing on WW&F gauge. Unless you miniaturize it to something like Gauge 1 dimenaions.

Somewhere I have the drawings for the SPV2000, including the 'kits' to make them eight-wheel drive. I suspect those won't do you much good... but if you have one of those $150 Constitution Liners, you might be able to restore one to AWD, hang the unions!

There were a number of different models of the Spicer drive units. Do you have a part number by any chance?

Here's a list of all of the Budd drawings in the IRM Pullman Library, 227 pages, I don't know how to search through it ("find" doesn't work), there are drawings for the RDC scattered around, and I found mention of a Spicer generator assembly, but haven't looked at nearly the whole document. I have the free version of Acrobat, I think if you have the paid version you might be able to search it: https://www.pullmanlibrary.org/2022-4-15BUDD.pdf

BC-SK-19595 Spicer Drive Guide, in the list, might be a place to start.

PDF24, a free download program, can search a PDF for key words.

Bear in mind that there may be slight design differences between a Spicer generator drive (which is technically always "backdriven") and a Spicer final mechanical drive. Most likely the differences will involve the (very carefully engineered!) tooth forms, finishing, and hardening in the spiral-bevel pinion and ring -- if you don't have direct access to CNC and other equipment, you might contact some of the suppliers and companies mentioned in places like Gear Technology magazine.

I am tempted to note that you MIGHT adapt components from an existing vehicle axle, including gears and bearings, and many of the techniques used to adjust them would probably apply. Reverse-engineer the housing from the mounting and driveline points, to preserve as much of the 'historic fabric' as possible.
