The McHugh family has assisted with railroad preservation for 60 years beginning with the late Jimmy McHugh in the 1960s. We recently had a spectacular event when we hosted the McHugh Steam Special with the world’s largest operating 2-6-6-2 Mallet type Steam locomotive at the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad located in Cumberland, MD. The March 4th, 5th, & 6th, event was a unique experience for the McHugh family, friends, business associates and railroaders, from across the country. This event also introduced the McHugh Company and the unique services that we provide to many in the heritage railroad and museum industry.
As of July 1st, we have several interesting projects at our rebuild shop facility that are underway for several heritage railroads and museums including: rebuilding a 3-foot gauge 25-ton diesel locomotive, rebuilding two complete GE 45-ton locomotives, rebuilding several sets of 3-foot gauge diesel locomotive truck assemblies, rebuilding two sets of standard gauge 45-ton GE locomotive truck assemblies, rebuilding several EMD locomotive truck assemblies, along with a rebuild and rewire of a EMD diesel locomotive on-site at a customer’s location.
The McHugh rebuild shop facility also has several projects underway that are for short line and industrial rail operations. This includes rebuilding EMD truck assemblies, rebuilding of D-77 traction motors, and the complete rebuilding of a specialized all-electric powered locomotive.
The McHugh Company in partnership with the Northern Illinois & Wisconsin Railway dba NIWX Corporation which has leased GE B-32 Dash 8, number 558 to the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad in Cumberland Maryland. The locomotive in currently undergoing some minor prep work before the old NS paint scheme is replaced. The WMSR team has designed a new paint scheme that reflects the railroads current business model.
A small 3-foot gauge 5-ton Plymouth arrived this week from California. The unit is owned by a private collector, and it will be rebuilt at our shop later this year.
