Bob, this is an interesting picture that brings a few thoughts to mind:

1. If I'm not mistaken, that looks like Baker valve gear. First time that I've seen that on a non-American locomotive.

2. What is "speed" in this case? This is a narrower gauge track than our standard gauge, correct? 3'6" if I recall correctly.

3. If this is that same engine, I believe there was an article a few years ago in MODELTEC magazine about this and a few other engines in New Zealand. I believe this locomotive was missing many significant parts and was largely rebuilt with new side and main rods and new cylinders to name but a few. Evidence that large piston valve cylinders can still be made today.
