In the late 1960s, the B&O and N&W leased a number of diesels to the CNJ as that railroad retired a number of older Alco, Baldwin, and FM diesels. The diesels included F-7 locomotives from both the N&W and CNJ, among others. One of B&O F-7 locomotives, later rebuilt as F9PH 7182 for MARC commuter service, and was last owned by Iowa Pacific and used in Watsonville, CA. This unit operated as CNJ 14 - http://www.railfan108.rrpicturearchives ... ?id=118086

Does anyone here have a roster of diesels leased or loaned to the CNJ or know where one might have been published in the past? I recall that such a roster might have been published in Rails Northeast in the late 1970s, but I can't find a reference to that.

Any leads would be appreciated - thank you for your consideration.

The B&O leased a few GP9’s, numbered in the upper 6600’s to the CNJ as well. No. 6604, originally 751 when new, still survives today, restored to B&O paint, on the South Branch Valley Railroad in West Virginia.

Also, in terms of a roster, Jersey Central Lines in Color V.1 by William J. Brennan (Morning Sun Books 1991) has a full CNJ diesel roster, including leased power. It is out of print. However, I have found that it usually is an easy find at most railroad memorabilia shows.

The B&O group over on groups.io would be a good place to inquire about the B&O portion. There’re quite a few list keepers and gurus there.

B&O allowed CNJ to renumber the locomotives; N&W did not. The numbers on the list were those assigned by CNJ but only one N&W F-7 was renumbered; N&W had a fit and that unit was promptly renumbered back.

CNJ also leased short-term various RDG BLW AS-16's when Babyface cab 71 became the last of her kind. She needed another Baldwin to MU with and provide a cab at her blind end. The engine sent varied from day to day.

The Central also bought SD40's 3061-3069 from B&O and some RS-3's from RDG.
