Consider its effect on disadvantaged peoples and whether it would be at odds with the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Model and Code of Conduct I trust all heritage and tourist operations have embraced. This peer reviewed article from two distinguished college professors makes the case: This article examines the symbolic whiteness associated with pumpkins in the contemporary United States. Starbucks’ pumpkin spice latte, a widely circulated essay in McSweeney’s on “Decorative Gourd Season,” pumpkins in aspirational lifestyle magazines, and the reality television show Punkin Chunkin provide entry points into whiteness–pumpkin connections. Such analysis illuminates how class, gender, place, and especially race are employed in popular media and marketing of food and flavor; it suggests complicated interplay among food, leisure, labor, nostalgia, and race. Pumpkins in popular culture also reveal contemporary racial and class coding of rural versus urban places. Accumulation of critical, relational, and contextual analyses, including things seemingly as innocuous as pumpkins, points the way to a food studies of humanities and geography. When considered vis-à-vis violence and activism that incorporated pumpkins, these analyses point toward the perils of equating pumpkins and whiteness. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10. ... ode=rgeo20 |

Just go back to the roots in Ireland and hand out large radishes to carve instead. Is that too white as well? But seriously, do you have any supporting evidence for this theory that doesn't cost $47.00 to read? The abstract seems to be making some very large stretches. |

This topic is quite a reach but I’ll bite. Seriously, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. This sounds like a desperate attempt to get some bit name recognition by proving something that doesn’t exist. If this was of some landmark importance published in 2015, why haven’t we heard of it? And they want you to pay $47 for the privilege of reading it. Hard pass. How do you even find this stuff? But, the good news is we got LOTS of free punkins! Woohoo! |

Clearly not accepting this as serious scholarship is a right wing talking point that academia has silly professors. |

Must be true. We just had the annual pumpkin chunkin festival in our little St. Lawrence River town of Clayton, NY which attracted a huge ( for Clayton) crowd of about 3,000 folks who came to witness who could throw a pumpkin the farthest into the River. The audience was about 99% white so I guess it must be true?? Ross Rowland |

This thread should almost be preserved for April 1. I can’t tell if I’m a violent racist or just full of goo. |

Ok, since it's not obvious that I am making a play on the argumentum ad absurdum argument to make a point about the intellectual corruption or perhaps more accurately the intellectual collapse of the academy; that is exactly where we're headed. |

I should know better than to fill my bloomers with chum and go for a swim in shark infested waters, BUT since I don't --- Does this mean that watermelons are associated with blackness ?? |

There is a small group of very vocal radicals who have made it their goal to destroy our American culture, and they do this by hacking away at every tradition and practice. The heritage rail industry is based upon celebrating and honoring our American culture so these efforts are a direct affront to our interests. But it is important to remember that it is a small number of people who write these articles and not to conflate these radical views with the prevailing attitudes of Americans. The vast majority (99%+) of us do not see pumpkins as "problematic" or "whiteness". |

To paraphrase Sigmond Froid: Sometimes a pumpkin is just a pumpkin. |
