Not being a rivet counter myself, but occasionally finding myself in need of minutia, can anybody tell me if there are any dimensional differences between the short high hoods of EMD GP7/9 and SD7/9? |

Having driven zillions of GP7s, GP9s, SD7s, and SD9s, I'd say the dimensions in question are the same... BUT, I don't have dimensioned drawings of these locomotive classes. There could be minute variations in size, and I'd never know the difference. |

I would suggest you get scale drawings of each and compare them. Are you considering transplanting a SD short hood onto a GP, or vice-versa? Phil Mulligan |

You might consider taking the applicable short hood GP and SD parts list and related drawings from EMD Parts Catalog 90 or the locomotive specification book to a photocopy place and having the scales matched up to allow a comparison. The GP7 came out more than 2 years before the SD7 and on units that originally had steam generators the GP and SD hood door arrangements are not the same. PC |
