Post subject: | Erie heavyweight coaches in VT? |
As you may be aware, several of the Erie (and later Erie Lackawanna) 1000 series "modernized" heavyweight coaches went to the D&H in the late 60's/early 70's. Some of these cars served on the D&H's Adirondack (though they never went south of Albany). After Amtrak converted the train to turboliners, the cars were stored. While the former Lackawanna "Phoebe Snow" coaches went to the MTA (and were destroyed in a fire), I have heard several stories that the Erie cars were sold to an individual and went to Vermont. Tim Hope this just isn't a hiccup in my long term memory, but..... I remember about the time Steamtown USA began running to Pocono Summit in 1987 they had several leased cars from private owners. One of these was supposedly an Erie Heavyweight. It looked like an Erie car anyway, no clerestory, the roof tapered at the ends and such, the trucks sure looked like what I've seen under other erie cars. Of course, it was painted "Lackawanna" like the rest of the Steamtown fleet at the time. There may have even been a photograph of it in Railfan or Railpace sometime in 1986/1987. I recall seeing similar cars in the RBMN/BM&R yard at South Hamburg. Mind you, this is from going by on Rte 61, but the roof contour is distinctive. Does Steve Gilbert have something to say? Electric City Trolley Museum Association |

I remember similar cars in Scranton in the late 80's. Weren't some of those Erie cars owned by the Susquehanna? Not sure if these are the same cars Tim asked about. As far as passenger cars in Vermont, outside of what the VRS runs, there aren't too many. Steamtown coaches 1070 and 1076 were purchased circa 1985 from the Detroit and Mackinac (pronounced MACK-in-awe), which had acquired them from Midwest Railway Historical Foundation in Cleveland (GTW 4070 operators then). I presume they got them direct from the EL. They were sold to the Susquehanna at the Foundation auction in 1987, and I believe they have been resold since. John Hart, Steamtown director, purchased the cars and painted them Lackawanna for his Pocono Summit diesel trains. While never Lackawanna originally, they were operated in Maroon and Grey on the EL. My 32nd/1997 Steam Passenger Service Directory lists the Astabula, Carson and Jefferson as having former Erie #1022. This car is pictured on their website http://www.acjrailroad.com/ behind Alco S2 518. This website contains further information for contacting the railroad directly. Note: The same listing says that they also own former DL&W baggage cars #200 and #201, and former LIRR coach #7133. Any updates on this equipment would be much appreciated. In regards to cars on the NYSW, the Utica railfan pages http://utica.railfan.net/ has several pictures of cars stored behind the NYSW shops http://utica.railfan.net/shoppic.htm. One of the pictures, linked below, shows what appears to be an Erie #1000 series coach behind the hopper car. This site also has a passenger car roster for the NYSW http://utica.railfan.net/rospic3.htm, however, it does have much information about car histories - perhaps there is somebody here who could help complete this roster. In regards to finding other cars from this series, as well as other remaining EL equipment, I would suggest contacting Philip Dohmen pdohmen@ddnnet.com as I understand that he has been working on an extensive roster of North American passenger equipment. I seem to remember seeing these cars ( in gray only) at NYS&W yard in Utica, NY, when I rode the Adirondack Scenic RR during the NRHS convention in 1998. An old STEA equipment roster referred to them as "smokers" with no further explanation. http://www.nps.gov/stea/ mustang746@earthlink.net |

Regarding former Erie coaches, I have a photo taken in 1989 of one of the two 1000-series cars that the NYS&W acquired from Steamtown, #1070, which was the car repainted Lackawanna colors. At the time, the car was stored near their office in Binghamton, behind the Auto Train car that is used as an office. 1070 was repainted NYS&W maroon and used for a few years, then sold in the early '90's when it reportedly developed brake problems. The car is now located in Cooperstown, NY and used as a restaurant. I was able to have dinner there once a few years ago and it was quite nice. Still in NYS&W colors too. The other car, "SF-4" is still in Utica, not sure the exact status of this car. There were two 1000's in Wilkes Barre, one basically complete, the other part of a restuarant building. Anyone know if they're still there? Erie #1022 on the Astabula, Carson and Jefferson may be the only operating example (and probably best)of these cars still left. The two baggage cars owned by the AC&J I'm told are actually ex-Erie, which would make the car numbers 200 and 201 correct. That car is Erie 2999 which was a buffet lounge car (one of 3 the Erie owned). It was a rebuild of a coach of the same class that the 1000 series came from, but it wasn't a 1000 series first. Erie Lackawanna Dining Car Preservation Society tstuy@eldcps.org |
