A "heads-up" to this crew on recent work that was well done to a fine example of CNR steam.
There is also a youtube video called "Spirit of Windsor Refurbishment."
No. 5588 ran in Ontario until the end of steam and was a pleasant sight on branch line passenger/mail trains.

Close off the cab and and fence it off. Those new gauges will be gone as soon as the addicts know they're there. Otherwise, a noble and worthwhile restoration. Canadian steam is gorgeous just by design.

I think the OP posted the wrong link, there apparently was some cosmetic work completed last month: https://citywindsor.ca/Newsroom/Pages/S ... e-TLC.aspx

"Spirit of Windsor Locomotive Gets Some TLC
May 12, 2023

The Spirit of Windsor on the riverfront will be looking a little brighter this summer. Crews have commenced with painting, and the public will continue to see activity at Dieppe Park over the next few months until refurbishment of the 112-year-old locomotive is complete.

The Pacific Type 4-6-2 steam locomotive saw many years of freight and passenger service for the Canadian National Railways before being retired in 1961. In 1962, the Historic Vehicle Society of Ontario (Windsor) launched a public campaign to save “Old 5588” from the scrap heap and to bring it to Windsor for the edification of future generations. Christened the "Spirit of Windsor," #5588 was dedicated to the community on May 6, 1965.

Fracas Painting is carrying out the work, which is expected to be complete at the end of June, weather permitting."

A shelter might stretch the time between painting beyond ten years.

My apologies for mixing up the links. The ad blockers tend to make newspaper sites untenable, and youtube is not a fan of ad blockers also!
There is a youtube site that might take you to a recent report. Simply search Spirit of Windsor Refurbishment on youtube.
It looks like a private company was hired to spruce up no. 5588. I agree with another comment above that a covering should be built on any of these outside display locos.
