The 611 has received designation on the National Register of Historic Places - NPS! This is a pretty big deal as there's over 112,000 current listings and only 40 steam locomotives nationwide that are on the registry. Official listing in the NPS database is expected in February. The state of Virginia listing and nomination form can be accessed at https://www.dhr.virginia.gov/historic-r ... /128-6479/ and https://www.dhr.virginia.gov/wp-content ... posted.pdf We plan on a hosting an official celebration of this designation and historic event at the Virginia Museum of Transportation on a to be determined date this spring. We would like to thank the Virginia Department of Historic Resources for their assistance on this project. |

It wonders me how something can be on the National Register of Historic Places when it moves. GG1 4859 was on the National Register of Historic Places when it was at RRMPA in East Strasburg. They discovered it had gone to Harrisburg so they delisted it. The Harrisburg NHRS had to get it listed again in Harrisburg. |

That very question was asked and the answer was that wherever the engine’s home base and paperwork is assigned to is the designated site. In this case, it’s obviously the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke. Once it’s on the NPS site, you’ll see that aerial photos of the designated location and coordinates all have to be included in the paperwork. |

Ha! 4859's current Official Location is Track 5, Harrisburg Station. That's under the trainshed roof. Phil Mulligan |

The categories for the nomination are "building, district, site, structure, object". Object fits. |
