Hi, Aaron: I was in the Reading & Northern's Pittston (ex Lehigh Valley Coxton) yard today ( Jan 15) and took a photo of a newly painted caboose. It's a former PRR N5 built 2-27. All the windows are blocked out. Body is Maroon (tuscan?) and roof is yellow. Can you tell me why they need this? Thanks for any info.

Take another look at your photos.
The roof is black, not yellow.
The end-posts and steps are yellow, for visibility by on-coming motorists at grade-crossings. The car is being used as a riding platform for long back-up moves, so the conductor doesn't need to hang on a freight car ladder.
The color is our version of Lehigh Valley "cornell red" -same as all of our passenger car fleet.

The Caboose (#477514) Is In Use To Make Back Up Moves As Steve Posts. I Remember It Was At Tamaqua For Some Time In 2000 To Back Up To LCN's Breaker In Arlington, PA. Great Job Steve! Also, The RBMN #801 Is Now Back In Service. It Went Out With The #802 To Temple, PA Yesterday! Now All The SW8's Are In Service! The Lehigh Valley Lives!

Caboose looks great! Hope I can see it in person on my next family visit to the Reading area.

Pic below, which was taken today(1/18/03), is of two of our cabooses sitting in our museum yard. I worked on the restoration of both inside and out. I painted PC18526 in the Fall of 2001, but I must admit, we had a professional sign maker letter it. ;)

The caboose Aaron refers to above is actually ex-Reading (ex-BM&R) #92844.
The ex-P.R.R car was sitting derelict at Port Clinton for many years, prior to restoration for service in fall 2002.

The #92844 Was Also At Pittston Junction In 2000. Is The #477514 The Ex-Conrail Caboose That Was In Back The Car Shop At Port Clinton?
