New Hampshire’s Hobo Railroad is now called the Granite State Scenic Railway. The name change comes months after the popular tourist railroad and its sister operation, the Winnipesaukee Scenic, were purchased by Patriot Rail.

The Granite State Scenic and Winnipesaukee Scenic (jointly known as the Plymouth & Lincoln Railroad) operate on 54 miles of former Boston & Maine trackage in the White Mountains. The operation was founded in 1987 by Ed and Brenda Clark. The family operated the Hobo Railroad out of Lincoln for a number of years before starting up the Winnipesaukee Scenic in 1991. For a number of years, the railroad used a fleet of Alco switchers, but today it uses EMDs.

Fantastic. I always thought the name betrayed the quality of what they're doing.

Yes, I think the name is a step up.

I would have chosen "Drifter Railroad", if it were up to me.

The Winnipesaukee was a seperate operation, based in Meredith, and later taken over by the Hobo. Sorry, but I can't provide dates. The original Winnipesaukee operator moved his equipment to Maine and operated as the Maine Coast.

And a chunk of the Maine Coast equipment, including the oddball S1 958 (it's wreck repair in the early 90s was made using whatever EMD SW-type window components were on hand in Waterville) are based on the Granite State property now.
