Jason Midyette has added more photos to his Boulder Rail web page, detailing restoration work on the narrow gauge train in Central Park at Boulder, Colorado. This display presently has former Colorado & North Western 2-8-0 No. 30 (later Denver Boulder & Western 30, then Colorado & Southern and Rio Grande Southern 74 and a former D&RGW caboose. A former D&RGW coach, long part of the display, has been fully restored and is presently kept at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden. The tender for the locomotive, shipped away to Strasburg, Colorado for restoration, has been completed and returned. Work continues on the engine itself. The intention is to first stabilize deterioration and make it rollable (without overenthusiastic dismantling) while evaluation continues toward making it operable again. See the link below for details.

The C&NW/DB&W line up Boulder Canyon was dismantled just after WWI. The C&S rebuilt the locomotive heavily in Denver after acquisition, assigning it to their South Park line between Denver and Leadville. When the remaining part of that route was finally standard gauged in 1943, the engine went to a used equipment dealer in Denver until purchase by the ailing Rio Grande Southern in 1949. When the RGS was abandoned, a civic group in Boulder returned it for display in the park, where it sat deteriorating for many years. In 1958, a caboose in the display was destroyed with dynamite as a college prank; it has since been replaced with the one currently there. Restoration efforts on the train began in the 1980s, beginning with a move to a new location. The group also has a small collection of standard gauge equipment, stored at a nearby power plant.
