Post subject: IC 4109 and GREENVILLE
PostPosted: Wed Jan 15, 2003 10:35 pm

I am trying to find out about two passenger cars near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I am guessing they were part of the Waccamaw Coast Line operation. One is a diner and the other is a Pullman sleeping car. Both are lightweight, smooth-side cars riding on 4-wheel trucks. They are in IC orange and chocolate.

The diner is numbered 4109 while the Pullman is named "GREENVILLE". I believe both cars were built by Pullman, but I would like to find out when they were built, their original configuration (if later modified) and the service in which they might have been used. The "GREENVILLE" has a window number plate with "CA9C" in white letters on a black background.

Any information would be appreciated.

According to the IC/GM&O Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment by James Kinkaid the Greenville is one of four cars acquired by the IC from the New York Central in late 1958 and October 1960. The cars were built by Pullman in 1940 as lot 6617 and were four compartment, four double bedroom, two drawing room sleepers. The IC renamed the cars Greenville, Grenada, Hammond and Harvey. The only NYC name given is Imperial Dome, which was renamed Hammond by the IC.

Illinois Central dining car 4109 was one of the railroad's may modernized heavyweight cars.

Robert Wayner's "Car Names, Numbers and Consists" identifies dining car 4109 as having been rebuilt by the railroad in 1947 from a coach (#2192). The initial rebuilt configeration of the car was as a 36-seat Dining Car. It was assigned to the GREEN DIAMOND as part of the trainset replacing the original articulated train. In 1947 it was also names "AUGUSTE CHOUTEAU"

Thanks very much for this information. Regarding the window number plate on the GREENVILLE with "CA9C", I believe this was the car number for one of its last assignments. I know the City of Miami cars were identified as "CM4" (a Chicago-Miami coach) or "CM36" (a Chicago-Miami sleeper) for instance. Is "CA_" a designation for another "City" train?
