As part of some ongoing research, I am trying to find out information on former Union Pacific and Chicago and North Western streamlined sleeping cars. If anyone has any information on any of these cars that still exist, your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Boyd Owens ddg14@attbi.com |

These include the AMERICAN series 6-6-4s, WESTERN series 12-4s, NOTHERN series 16DupRmt-3DER-1Cpt cars. I have notes that indicate that the four IMPERIAL series 4-4-2s were sold private with at least one going through Autoliner (I think they rebuilt one into a Rock Island business car). The two cars now in Travel Town in Griffith Park were part of a motel in Sioux Falls and mentioned in Trains magazine May 1965. There was an additional City train 4-4-2 there named CIVIC CENTER. I do not know what happened to this one. After the railroad dropped out of the Union Pacific trains many of its cars remained leased to Pullman and operated where needed. I've seen pictures of some of these cars painted in the IC scheme for service to New Orleans and Florida. I think the motel was painted in IC colors and the IMPERIAL 4-4-2s had the same paint scheme. Two former sleepers are in use on the Midland Railway in Baldwin City, KS. Both were converted by the UP into MOW sleepers, and retain their MOW green colors. The American Shores is used as the "Midland Hilton" for volunteer crew members so they can stay at the railway overnight. It has 2 bedrooms still intact at the vestibule end of the car. The center section is set up as a lounge/kitchen area. A short hall down the car's center has a bathroom/shower room on one side, and a utility room sits directly across from it. The end of the car contains 4 bunk beds and storage lockers for crew members. The owner of the Shores has performed several mechanical upgrades to the car. We are looking at painting it into UP Two-Tone Grey in the next year or two. The American Heights is in service on the Midland's Boy Scout Train. It has the same floorplan as the American Shores, but was gutted and now contains 52 wooden bunks. This car is used to house Boy Scout troops who come to participate in the railway's Train Camps. Just about all of the Union Pacific AMERICAN series 6-6-4 Pullmans became MOW bunk cars. There were 42 such Pullmans and 40 of them became bunk cars. One AMERICAN LAKE was wrecked Nov 12, 1951 near Evanston, wyoming. Another AMERICAN COMMAND is not among those converted. Seven of the 12 IMPERIAL series 4-4-2 Pullmans became bunk cars. Four of the balance (IMPERIAL BIRD, CAPE, LETTER & SANDS) are known to have gone into private ownership. IMPERIAL CAPE was dismantled for parts.
