#31 has finished her annual and is now ready to start her 44th season at the Strasburg Rail Road on February 14th. Thomas, #89, #90, and #475 are all undergoing their annuals at this time. #475 is just about finished. #90 will be receiving about 100 new flexible staybolts due to a number of the original sleeves reaching the end of their lives, as well as two firebox corner patches, and sheet replacement in her tender. This work should be finished by June 1st. The parlor car Marian, and the dining car Lee Brenner both entered the shops on January 2nd, for new diesel generators, from Stauffer Diesel, and extensive rewiring, as well as truck repairs on the Brenner. Both are scheduled to be on the train on opening day, February 14th. We are currently working on the following contract projects. Each line covers a separate customer: 1. We have a driving wheel set in for crown brass and journal work, 2. Four wheel sets for new tires. 3. New main rods, and piston rods have been designed, and material is on order for their production. 4. Consolidated safety valves are being overhauled. 5. Three form 4's for three separate customers locomotives are being calculated. We are also building a new code boiler for a Frick traction engine. It follows modern practice in that it is all welded, using square corners in the firebox in place of the flanged sheets of a traditional riveted boiler. This makes economic sense, if you can live with the appearance. Nice pic huge URL. What's the can under construction in the background? Does Strasburg have the capability to provide radiused corners for straight runs even if not radial flanging capabilities? Dave |

The “can” in the background is the barrel and the wagon top for the “Lyon” reproduction. The (flanged in two directions) throat sheet is in place as well. The rest of the firebox is laid out and drilled, but still stacked on the floor. This firebox will be of flanged, and welded construction. We can and do make flanged sheets in any configuration, either by hot flanging, or with our McCabe flanging machine (we have hot flanged a Belpaire hip sheet in 7/8 thick steel), it is just very time consuming, i.e. expensive when compared to simply welding together two flat plates. In the case of the Frick boiler, cost was the primary concern. kelly@strasburgrailroad.com |

We worked on the geared locomotives in the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania though most of the work was cosmetic. We have done some work for Cass over the years as well. linnwm@supernet.com |
