Hello! I'm on the Train Crew at the Gold Coast Railroad Museum and have slowly begun to realize that our museum has more history then some of the equipment! I've begun researching the museums past equipment and have come across "Gold Coast No. 838 'Ugly Duckling'".. A vertical boiler, Motorcar looking steam engine! i know it was built by Robert Louis Beekman, and some point after hiss passing it was sold to Paul Merriman of the TVRM someone in this forum posted a photo of it in an underdeveloped state years ago, does it still exist?

I (think) i've attached a photo of it completed. aswell as the one i found on this forum. No Copyright infringement is intended.

Anything Helps.
Thanks!
Jordan

I've often been intrigued by it and similar speeders. It seems to be a bit of niche in the speeder world.

How do these things relate to FRA Part 230?
Quote:
§ 230.1 Purpose and scope.

This part prescribes minimum Federal safety standards for all steam-propelled locomotives operated on railroads to which this part applies.

I suppose it all depends on what the definition of a locomotive is.

Its not a locomotive. Just like rotary snowplows, etc. and thus do not fall under FRA rules for locomotive boilers.

From memory (subject to time related unintentional alterations):

Marine boiler from a steam launch. Dodge truck transmission. Stanley Steamer engine. It was fired on LP gas when I last saw it run over 50 years ago.

Bob Beekman was an expert tinkerer. Evocative linguist as well.

That might have been the Dodge of the real Power Wagon years, when the name still meant quality and good engineering.

While I can't speak to its ultimate fate, it is long gone from TVRM.
