I usually drive through Akron, Ohio once every other week since I am an over the road truck driver. I always look at the yard office and look at the passenger cars that are normally sitting there which includes a Baltimore and Ohio coach. However, this time I saw a very good sized steam locomotive tender with the coal bunker intact that was painted black with a Chessie “C” logo on it Sitting on the west side of the Baltimore and Ohio coach. I have never seen this tender ever in my life. I even thought back to the original 1985 614 test runs out of Huntington and this tender was not a part of that consist. Is there something happening at the Wheeling? Unfortunately, I was not able to get any pictures as it’s a little hard to take a truck with a 53 foot trailer and get back in there without causing a scene. Any info would be appreciated.

AMC Rail leases the shop at Brittain Yard. Must be a project of theirs.

I know someone who helped get the car off the private property it was on in Medina to deliver to the Wheeling. I can't remember the owner's name, but he's connected to the NE Ohio Live Steamers. There are no identifying marks on the tender, but some believe it came from a 2-8-4 C&O Kanawha, which is a real possibility, since there were 90 of them and they were among the last steam locomotives to be retired by the C&O. Either it hasn't been sold yet, or nobody is talking about who now owns it or where it's eventually going.

A somewhat related note, since the former AC&Y shops were mentioned. Turns out the late Jerry Jacobson's father, a construction company owner, was the general contractor on building their "modern" Diesel shop in the early 1950s. I believe the design was by Fairbanks-Morse, since they sold them their small fleet of locomotives to replace steam.

The tender was originally built for a C&O K-3 Mikado before it became the tender for the steam powered wrecking derrick that it has been paired with for decades now. The crane and tender were stored under cover in Kent, OH.

The photo I saw showed a conventional, rectangular, six axle tender. There is speculation that it could become the auxiliary tender for the PRR T-1 project, but that is strictly speculative.
