Came across this 1920's ish Advertising Flyer for some ALCO 2-8-0's being offered for sale on the used locomotive market.

Wonder how many buyers they would have today?

Anyone have a guess as to what road's locomotives these were? Photo seems to be a builder's photo with the Railroad name inked out (the cab and tender sides have been heavily retouched), but the road number 2127 is still visible on the sand dome. Flyer seems to indicate that Southern Iron has 240locomotives available numbered 1813 to 2053

Southern Iron & Equipment was featured recently in one of Shorpys' insanely high resolution photographs:

Kind of looks like NYC (LS&MS) G-43c.

Perhaps leftover USRA USATC leased locomotives in the Post WWI era?

I'm away from my library at the moment, but if you can locate a copy of Tom Lawson's "Locomotives of Southern Iron & Equipment Company" you will find a wealth of information about this dealer.

Hi All,

Loco appears to be ex BR&P #268 Brooks 1903-2 CN#26468 sold 7-1920 to SI&E #1582, then 9-1920 SI&E sold to Anglo Mexican Petroleum per records of Gene Connelly & Tom Lawson. It appears to have been sold and lettered CMAP and numbered 2127 who rejected it and returned to SI&E. I have a lot of records for SI&E, Georgia Car & Loco & Birmingham Rail & Loco and other dealers as well. Glad to share.

Hope this helps.

Blessings!

Thank you for the information.

Any idea where the locomotive went after Southern Iron?

Thanks for asking Jason as I dug deeper into it and as often happens there is more to the story. There was apparently a lot of confusion as these lists were done over the years.

Tom Lawson is the authority on SI&E as he has a lot of their actual records. After digging around a lot I found that Tom has resolved the actual question. The earlier info I used was correct in that it was SI&E #1582 sold to Petroleos de Mexicano #2127 9-1920. What is incorrect is that it was not returned to SI&E #1813. I have records for Petroleos de Mexicano but they show no further information.

SI&E #1813 was ALCo Brooks CN#27758 BR&P #310. It was taken in 4-21-1923 & sold to Missouri & N Arkansas #37 10-10-1923. My records show M&NA sold it to Missouri Fork RR #37 ~1933.

Sorry for any confusion.

Blessings!
