Most are scrapped, while some are preserved for historical and educational purposes. The New York Transit Museum, housed in a decommissioned station in Downtown Brooklyn, has several retired cars that are part of its vintage fleet and which are occasionally brought out for nostalgia rides."

The New York Transit museum is a great place to visit - the subway cars are all open so you can step on board and have a seat and really "feel" the history. They have old wooden cars, Pullman built cars, all the way up to almost present day.

The nostalgia rides sell out really fast, but I took one years ago and it was so much fun.
