I'm a little late in this discussion about operating Vulcans from last week but we too own one here in Altoona. Overlooked with the problems getting our K4 restored is our Vulcan 0-4-0, #2826. This little saddletank of ours was built in 1918 and operated on the Berwind-White Coal Mining property in Hollidaysburg into the early 1960's. We believe this makes it the last operating steam loco in Blair County. Those that have looked at her, she is named "Nancy", say she is basically a complete locomotive. We would love to restore her and return her to service. I know, you all think I'm nuts given the K4 situation but it is something I'd like to see done in the near future.

Far from it, Scott. She's the perfect engine to fire up for caboose hops around the yard on special occaisions--like the B&O's St. Elizabeth's 0-4-0 or Savannah's GOAT. Just what you need, seriously.

What Erik said. Having finished two saddletankers in the past 3 years, send it down and we will get her up and running for you. It is as simple and inexpensive as a steamer can be, and the perfect size to shunt around Juniata.

Realisticaly speaking, how useful as a day to day engine is the K4 in relative terms?

What the museum needs right now is to focus on getting back on track with finances and just plain survival. While I appreciate Scott's and Erik's interest in running the "Nancy," tinkering around with a saddletanker (or even the K4s) should be low on the list of priorities.

First of all I don't think Scott is nuts. There are quite a number of museums, groups, etc. that are working on an engine that is too large to run often and in very many places. It makes more sense to restore an engine that can be used more often and in a small application.

I should have been more clear. Well down the road, NOT right now, is what I intended.
